Micro Needling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that stimulates collagen development to treat skin problems. It is also known as collagen induction therapy and can help people who want to decrease their stretch marks and acne scars. Additionally, it is common in anti-aging treatments, including sunspot removal and eyelid surgery.

How does it work?

It works by stimulating the development of collagen in your skin. The concept is that the procedure’s pinpricks cause minor damage, and the skin reacts by producing new collagen-rich tissue. As a result, the fresh tissue has a more uniform texture and tone. Typically, the skin will lose collagen as it ages or as a result of an injury. Therefore, new tissue is required to aid in the production of more collagen, enabling the skin to become firmer.

Are there any potential side effects?

The most common side effect seems to be a minor irritation after the treatment. For a few days after, you might notice some redness on the treated area.

ARE YOU A SUITABLE CANDIDATE?

If you are in good health overall and have certain skin conditions (that haven’t been resolved by other dermatological treatments, like peels;) then you could be a suitable candidate for this form of treatment.

It might not be suitable for you to undergo this treatment if:

  • You’ve got open wounds

  • You are pregnant

  • You have a history of scars

  • You suffer from a variety of dermal conditions

  • You’ve recently undergone radiation therapy

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

To reduce the risk of discomfort and pain, the medical professional will apply a topical anesthetic one hour before your treatment. The doctor makes tiny pricks under your skin using a pen-like instrument. Since the pinpricks are so small, you’re unlikely to notice them later. The doctor will pass the instrument through your skin uniformly, ensuring that the fresh skin that emerges is also even. When it is over, a serum or soothing cream may be applied to the treated area.

WHAT ARE THE TARGETED AREAS?

Microneedling is most commonly used on the face to treat the following:

  • Sunspots (age spots)

  • Acne scars

  • Large pores

  • Skin tone that is uneven

  • Wrinkles and fine lines

  • Skin elasticity that has decreased

  • Scars of various kinds

It is also often used to treat stretch marks in other parts of the body. This technique can also treat scarring in other areas of the body.

FOLLOWING MICRONEEDLING, WHAT TO EXPECT

It is not invasive. Only little to no downtime is required. If you are happy and comfortable, then you should return to your regular schedule after the treatment. Sunscreen helps ensure that your skin is well protected as it will be more sensitive post-treatment.

Usually, patients can start seeing the results in a few weeks. You will need follow-up sessions and possibly other complementing treatments to help sustain the outcome of microneedling. The doctor will recommend the best treatment plan for you based on your specific objectives.
